Sadybusiness: I am Irish. I do not celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Normally I don’t reblog a lot of very wordy posts, but Sady pretty much says everything I have to say about St. Patrick’s Day in relation to my 1/2 Irish heritage. Growing up my mother sang the praises of the IRA, bragged about how her father and his friends helped to smuggle money & arms for their efforts, made me take Irish dancing and learn the words to too many songs. I grew up eating dinner under a framed portrait of Bobby Sands and my mother actually painted the following James Connolly quotes on one of our walls: “If you strike at, imprison, or kill us, out of our prisons or graves we will still evoke a spirit that will thwart you, and perhaps, raise a force that will destroy you! We defy you! Do your worst!” I still don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Okay, so: My dad, who is the Irisher portion of my family, was like really super intense about being Irish. There were books about Irish history and the Irish culture handed to me from a really young age that I might Know My People (my favorite picture book, as…
