Special treat! Here’s a video of Mirah and Thao doing a cover of Pat Benetar’s “Love is a Battlefield.”
Good job, anonymous xylophone player!
I love Mirah, you all know that, but I’m still not really into the Thao & Mirah collab and I’m not really into this cover, which is sad, because I’m really, really into the original version of “Love is a Battlefield.”
I guess this means that BMad gets to hang onto the title of reigning champ of indie Pat Benetar covers. (You can download her cover of “Invincible,” a b-side on her KRS Mailorder Freaks 7” here.)
Also here’s a punky-sounding cover of Destiny’s Child’s Say My Name performed by Superchunk.
DAY IS MADE!
GOOD GOD I LOVE SUPERCHUNK.

Lunachicks - Just What I Needed (live)
OK, I am in love with the girl who lets out a bloodcurdling shriek as she realizes (just prior to the vocals kicking in) what song they’re playing, because, had I been there, that would have been me.
September Gurls (Big Star cover) - Dum Dum Girls
“I’m a September girl and my boyfriend was a December boy. I guess it doesn’t work out.” - Dee Dee
I am pleasantly surprised by just how much I like this.
Allo Darlin’, “Atlantic City” (Bruce Springsteen cover)
Taken from Play Some Pool, Skip Some School, Act Real Cool: A Global Pop Tribute to Bruce Springsteen
If you were a pill, I’d take a handful at my will
And I’d knock you back with something sweet & strong
By the time you wake up, in February make-up
Like the moon and the morning star you’re gone
Tonight makes love to all your kind, tomorrow’s pickin’ ValentinesThe Sissies - “Valentine” (Replacements cover)
Let’s agree that Paul Westerberg’s greatest contributions to popular culture were made through teen films and tweepunk, okay? Because the original just isn’t as good. (And everyone skips to “Can’t Hardly Wait” when they’re listening to Pleased to Meet Me anyway, right?)
Aw, I like the original (though this cover has a special place in my heart.) Favorite Pleased to Meet Me track, however, is “Alex Chilton.”
Best Coast, “Fist City” (Loretta Lynn cover)
I was so stoked when I heard Best Coast was covering this on their recent tour. I wish they were coming nearer to Cleveland so I could use my gust-list spot!
Grass Widow-Walking Out on Love
I can’t wait for my copy of this tape to come in the mail! My dad used to play his copy of The Nerves’ EP all the time while I was growing up &, as a result, I’m super fond of them. I’m so excited to hear how some of the other artists on this comp reinterpret their songs.
